Charcoal Portrait-Drawing Workshop
with Hugh Appleton

Above The Angel Hotel, Helston

11th January 2024

The perfect preparation for painting in oils!

This workshop is for those who want to improve their ability to capture a likeness in a portrait, or their ability to observe and draw accurately.

"I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Hugh Appleton studying portraiture at The Poly in Falmouth. He created a lovely relaxed atmosphere, initially demonstrating technique, then allowing us to work independently but on hand to help and assist as required. I particularly enjoyed having Hugh paint alongside us during the sessions as it added a "collaborative feel” to the process."
~ Workshop participant Jo

Hugh says...

"I'm committed to understanding the ways in which we can transfer the visual images we see onto a two-dimensional surface, to create the illusion of three-dimensions (or sometimes even four..!) We'll explore the relationship between the image on our retinas and the image in our ‘mind’s eye’, the tricks our minds play on us – in terms of interpreting visual information, and ways in which we can anticipate and counter these effects. I'll explain how to ‘map’ the face in a way that leaves little room for error, and several ways you can check the accuracy of your drawing.

It’s a lot of information – you’ll need a notebook!"

Practical information about the workshop

You'll learn how to identify the information that defines a face (whether you're working from a live model or a photograph), allowing you to achieve a likeness with a simple sketch, or to work towards a fully-developed drawing.

We’ll build on whatever experience you already have and Hugh will give you 1-to-1 guidance on any particular element of the process you feel unsure about.

Charcoal is a very forgiving medium, that behaves in a similar way to paint, but without the setting-up and cleaning up-time or the added complication of colour. If you haven’t used it much before it can feel a little intimidating but Hugh will show you how to tame it and make it your friend so you can create exciting and powerful drawings.

We have a live model to sit for us.

All equipment, materials, refreshments and a homemade light lunch is provided.

Our day starts at 10am and finishes at 4pm with an hour for lunch.

What else do I need to know?

Although we hope to run monthly portrait classes we are currently taking bookings for Thursday the 11th January only.

Our venue is the light and spacious old ballroom in the Angel Hotel, 16 Coinagehall St, Helston TR13 8EB. There is no parking available at the venue however there are multiple pay and display car parks in Helston.

Access to the Old Ballroom is via a straight flight of steps. Trevow Helston acknowledges that the poor access to this space creates a barrier for some people and acknowledges that this is a failing of this workshop. As other pop-up events manifest themselves accessability will be prioritised. If you have any further access questions please feel free to email us at hello@trevowhelston.co.uk.
